An additional insured is a person or organization protected under another party's insurance policy in addition to the primary insured, typically added by endorsement at the request of a counterparty in a contract. The status is most commonly required in construction, transportation, healthcare, and entertainment contracts, where one party needs coverage extended from another party's general liability or auto policy to protect against claims arising from the relationship. Additional insured status is established by an endorsement document attached to the underlying policy, and the list of additional insureds is typically shown in the description of operations section on a certificate of insurance.
